Enginer Liban Adan Mohamed Authorhe recent agricultural assessment conducted by WARO in Baardheere, Gedo, highlighted significant challenges faced by local farmers. With nearly 1,200 farmers residing in the surrounding villages, the assessment aimed to understand their concerns regarding agricultural practices, particularly focusing on seed quality and pest management, as well as their strategies for adapting to and mitigating climate change impacts.

Key Findings

Complaints About Seed Quality

During the assessment, a substantial number of farmers expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of seeds available to them. Many reported poor germination rates and reduced crop yields, which directly impact their livelihoods. The farmers indicated that the seeds often lacked the resilience necessary to withstand the local climate challenges, including prolonged droughts and unpredictable rainfall patterns.

Pest Issues

In addition to seed quality, farmers raised concerns about insect infestations that threaten their crops. Insects such as locusts and other pests have caused significant damage, leading to further losses in agricultural productivity. The farmers reported a lack of effective pest control measures and resources, which exacerbates their vulnerability to climate-related challenges.

Climate Change Adaptation Strategies

  1. Diversification of Crops: Many farmers are shifting to more resilient crop varieties that require less water and are better suited to the changing climate. This diversification helps spread risk and improve food security.
  2. Water Conservation Techniques: Farmers are adopting water-saving irrigation methods, such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting, to optimize water use and enhance crop resilience during dry periods.
  3. Community Training Programs: Through initiatives supported by WARO and INGO’s, farmers are participating in training programs aimed at improving their agricultural practices. These programs focus on sustainable farming techniques, integrated pest management, and effective seed selection.
